I don't really buy the 'boosting' tactic during pvp to be honest. Placing blocking items below a mobile's feet is known to be inaccurate on UOSA since it was not possible back in the day due to the server rejecting it when it was attempted. There are only a couple possible ways that this could be achieved to begin with in the game that comes to my mind due to this fact.
1. Having another player place it for you when you logged out.
2. Hold the item after picking it up from the ground and 'alt+F4' your way out of the game so the item falls back to the ground for the next login.
Both of these tactics are way to horrendous for pvp situations back in the day. I just don't see anyone actually utilizing it during a pvp situation unless the argument that placing blockable items below your feet is a RunUO mechanic only is a lie.
Also, wasn't 'boosting' and 'pushing' fixed after the gating and ressing house bugs were fixed?

Well the trick we used to get into towers was basically to cast a energy field on ourselves. I don't remember when it started being possible to put a box under your feet but i do know we used it.

you could also do it by standing on top of any mobile. i just used to dismount and log in/out to change z-axis.GuardianKnight wrote:Well the trick we used to get into towers was basically to cast a energy field on ourselves. GuardianKnight,
I was refering to your ambigious quote

It was not used to "break into a house", unless you are breaking into a home that is public or one that you are already friended to. In which case, it's not much of a break in unless the owner was silly enough to keep a public house and not consider the possiblity of people logging in inside.I think they know it exists but don't want people breaking into houses so it's disabled.

I never used this for PvP - although you never know, some people may have used it to gate in their friends.Faust wrote:I don't really buy the 'boosting' tactic during pvp to be honest.
You would get a friend to place the box for you, or get another one of your own chars.
TBH though the dismounting your horse, standing on it, logging out and logging back in [even without your char disappearing] would work too from memory - as discussed by nightshark/assshark.
I've tried to find mention of this on the old school usenet newsgroup things but I'm having real trouble thinking of actual search terms that might bring up some results...

There was a very simple trick to getting solid items under your feet. Set the item where you want it, pick it up and step where it was. Then try to drop the item in an invalid place (such as a passing bunny, a locked bag, anything that would 'fail' and send the item back to where it was: under your feet).Faust wrote:I don't really buy the 'boosting' tactic during pvp to be honest. In fact, the easiest and most common method I used was good old-fashioned water barrels. Have one in your backpack, fill it with water (it appears where you are but can be walked through) then drain the water back out with an empty pitcher (making it a solid item, while you're still in the same spot).
I've heard those don't work here, though.
In any case, I definitely remember the z-axis thing. I once used it to win a race to the top of my friend's tower, and I used it extensively for exploration. Getting on top of buildings and into hidden underground areas was one of my favorite pastimes, so I used this and line-of-sight teleportation quite a bit.
Re: Z axis things which are seemingly unproveable but existe
I'm not really doubting that it wasn't possible. I simply stated that I didn't buy it towards using it as a viable pvp tactic. Also, we know at one point you could 'push' yourself from blockable items. However, this was fixed due to house break in exploits and it seems likely that this would have been fixed along with it in my opinion. Would be best to nail down when the fix went into the game before throwing it in there for accuracy reasons. I know that the 'pushing' feature was fixed before our cutoff date for the house break in bugs. I used that a lot during pret2a and it was definitely fixed well before November '99. I just don't know if the z-axis exploit was a part of that or not since I never used it.

The z axis bug was fixed in late UOR - early aos.

Haha poor old Faust, always the last to find out about the best bugs in the game

Re: Z axis things which are seemingly unproveable but existe
No bug comes anywhere close to the hundreds of houses that I looted with the sandbag gating and ressing exploits.

What about the one where you could block the whole area of the land up to a house and float a boat near it then when you walk off the plank, you enter someone's house?
That one was neat.
