Actually, Derrick has mentioned it several times himself that he eventually wants them to move into the actual in game world.

We will just have to wait and see how long such a major overhaul or rewrite takes place though.

Its good to recode all events etc make them in real world, redsign them all etc, after the major core mechanics are fixed. Then remove the current events and replace with the new ones for more ingame content.
Ie. dont take the focus off the more important (opinion?) tasks for less important ones.
More bagball.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would pursue such a massive recode like this before fixing some of the current major issues that are on the table at the moment.

There really isn't many era accurate major overhauls that come to mind besides the skill gain and spawning system though.

This sort of thing may happen shorter than you would think. The only major hurdle is the decompilation process for those two systems. The skill gain process was moving along quite well the last time Batlin released any information about it. I have seen many comments from Derrick that he would love to see some in game content added to the shard that would have to come in the form of events to maintain era accuracy.

regardless of whether the recent increase in players on the field is due to the limiting of events, the fact remains that if you were to host events in the prime time playing hours, you would see all of that action disappear for the duration of the event. this won't change unless silver/tropheys are removed, there is a entrance fee for the events, or the events are taken out completely. they involve NO risk with a good chance of getting a prize, which means pretty much anybody who's online at the time will play them.

when given the choice between large groups of players interacting in an event or in the real world, i'd choose the real world any day.

An entrance fee for an event sounds like a good idea, even if the fee were unreasonable people would still pay to play.

an entry fee is only making the rich richer..

you think people are gonna pay 1,000 - 10,000 w/e price just to watch me or spanky win?

You're way far ahead of yourself, and not thinking all situations through so let me help you out. There are quite a few events, no need to name them all for you. There is something besides a 1v1 tournament (which both of you have been beaten at enough times for people to have hope). With that being said I stand by my statement that a fee for EVENTS (not just 1v1 tourneys) would be a good idea.

Ok misunderstanding maybe on my part or your part, not sure. I thought marm was talking about an entrance fee just to participate in the event. For example, 5-10k to participate in a CTF, with no guarantees of any silver/trophy. I think a system could be worked out that could benefit the shard. Possibly turning the events into a large gold sink, and adding another element to the economy.

Pay to play has been thrown out there by Kaivan for over a year now for a gold sink.

The idea has went no where for some reason though.

well as it stands, losing an event doesn't matter except for the fact that you've lost 30mins of your time. thats not how UO is supposed to work. there is no situation in the 'real' game world in which you would be taking no risk whatsoever. just the enjoyment of playing the event should cost the player something, nevermind winning.

obviously, in an event where people respawn, you cannot introduce loot rules.. but you can make people pay to play. if you lose, you dont get your money back. if you win, you get what you paid + extra in the form of silver.

unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), this will dramatically decrease the number of people who play events. at the same time it would also probably raise the price of silver which would serve as a balancing factor, motivating more people to play.

non free use tournaments already contain a minor gold sink and minor risk, but consuming 150 each reg and winning a trophy worth 70-140k is hardly a balanced trade off.

the most logical way to deal with no risk environments, rather than try and add risk to them, is to remove them entirely.

Or we could have just left events the way they were before this recent change, and turned it into a gold sink like we're talking about. You make the reward minor and the cost high. If you pay say 5k/10k to just enter a CTF, and even if you win you don't get your money back, but instead get one silver that would be a fair tradeoff overall. I think a lot of people would be willing to dump their money into a CTF for an opportunity to win 1 silver.
