Persistant Meaningless Changes & Giveaways
I am beginning to get a little peeved with the the small meaningless changes that are being made to UOSA.
I understand that its the aim of the server to be era accurate and that to achieve this accuracy changes are made as and when somthing is confirmed to inaccurate.
The reason I chose UOSA over other servers was for one reason - 'Second Age is the most accurate emulation of the UO: T2A era online today. There are no giveaways' (from UOSA main page)
Maybe I have misread this, but to me there is contradiction here.
By making era accurate changes your are in effect giving away because someone always benefits from a change and in turn someone always usually suffers.
There have been 2 recent changes that have hit me quite hard:
Cove bank: The Cove banker was removed - As a result I had to close up my shop as people prefer shopping with a nearby bank - the value of the houses dropped and I was left with little return.
Metal Chests: I have just read that it is now possible to fish up metal chests that are the exact same graphic as the ogre loot chests - Being the owner of 4 ogre loot chests which were worth between 300-400k a piece (1.2-1.6mill), they are now probably worth 50k each max , so I stand to loose atleast 1 million.
Wheres the giveaways? -
Anyone who has sold an ogre loot chest to myself or anyone else has in effect recieved a giveaway, same goes for the people who have sold houses in desirable locations which become less diserable due a change, i.e, removing the local bank. This is through no fault of there own but none the less they have benefited at the expense of others due a change made in the game.
Truth of the matter is that it wasnt the changes to ultima online that killed the game but the effect of the changes to people who had worked hard to achieve something within the game only to have it taken away from them because of a change. The idea of other players benefiting from your own personal loss is the hardest thing to take in the game for me and this is what drives players away.

Re: Persistant Meaningless Changes & Giveaways
I've seen people still spend loads of money on the O. Loot chest .. In fact I told one guy right before he bought one .. he check forums and indeed the image was no longer as rare, he still bought it for the name. So I'd still value yours high.
As for property yeah that sucks that your shop isn't doing well any more but you can't say that if the bank was still there people would still come.. There are many reasons to go to a certain area to shop .. if say a PK guild like the urks moved in and claimed the area .. this also would drop traffic .. Player traffic is not some thing that can be controlled, with one move.
However if you need an area to set up shop pm me maybe I can help.

All the changes were made for era accuracy, you have to expect changes to be made toward that goal. Every time a change is made there are winners and losers, but where you come is down to luck really. It's in no way a giveaway, any benefits players reap from changes are just good luck. The stuff that happened to you is plain bad luck. I can appreciate it must suck to lose value on your stuff, but don't let a run of bad luck ruin a game for you.
In future you can better prepare yourself for such changes by monitoring the accuracy discussion forums. Most changes are well discussed there before being implemented so you can give yourself a heads up on any stuff you might need to sell/move before the change.

Sounds to me like it was more of a takeaway...from you... ZING!
But seriously... i lost value in my real estate when the cove banker went missing(wasnt there a chance he might come back, err be replaced?) I had a sweet spot right by the town and grand plans...now i gotta judge wheter there is enough traffic to make the area worth anything. These things happen. When they did away with bank checks i didnt catch the info and had a decision.."keep the 60,000 gold check i had" or "turn it back into gold because it's a significant chunk of my nestegg" ; some people got earlier word of the change and filled a room of their large brick with 2000g bank checks....These things happen.
Re: Persistant Meaningless Changes & Giveaways
I thought your "giveaways" was going to be a gripe against someone receiving custom items...
I don't really see a problem with the changes being made. Yea, it totally sucks when it effects you, but you have to realize if you're going to bank a lot of investment into something, and you're worried about resell value, you need to constantly be aware of what's changing, IE: Get on test, etc.
If you want to really play the change market, start playing silver.

When you buy something like an Ogre loot chest, you're buying stock. You're buying baseball cards.
The item does nothing; it's not terribly useful. You were just hoping you could sell it to some other sucker for more than you paid for it. If you wanted it for yourself, to look at, use, and enjoy yourself, you wouldn't care what price it sold for.
Your stock went down. Tough luck. Next time, invest in something that's actually useful, and you'll care less about the market rate of it, because you'll be getting value out of it every day in use.**
** good advice for those thinking about investing in the stock market too

While speculation isn't a crime, that is generally good advice. A useful item's value will not fluctuate as much as a non-useful item.Mikel123 wrote:When you buy something like an Ogre loot chest, you're buying stock. You're buying baseball cards.

Cove never had a bank to begin with - I spent countless times paging GMs and counselors petitioning for a bank on Atlantic when I was bored.
The metal chest though I swear never were fished up like this!

Man I've been preaching this shit forever. Who the f*** would pay 4 million gold for a lava tile!?!? I would rather have 4 Million gold worth of regs. I always found the "rare scene" mind boggling. I could just never wrap my head around it. So.. there rare? But most of them don't do..... anything. Something like a black dye tub I could understand, at least it does something. But statues?? Little things like hanging armor pants?? Sometimes I think to myself, "the f*** is wrong with you people"? lolBraden wrote:While speculation isn't a crime, that is generally good advice. A truly good shop doesn't need to rely on city traffic to keep business up. It just means you need to work a little harder to keep your customer base and keep traffic flowing towards your house to shop there.
Otherwise, sell the house and buy one closer to a nearby city instead. I just saw like 2 Brit Gate houses for sale which will provide a lot more traffic than Cove did.
