Hail!
Hey all,
Like so many before me, i have once again caught UO Nostalgia. Signed up to a 14day Free Trial to check it all out before i considered making the plunge with my old account.
I had not player since 04-05 when my previous bout of UO Nostalgia kicked in and i bought a copy of SE off the shelves at the local EB Games. Before that i played from 99 to 01, and shortly left after they ganked it with Trammel and the like. I made the switch from Pacific to Oceania once EA finally gave us Ozzies a server.
Anyway, logged back on to Oceania, hardly a soul and sweet all happening judging by the stratic shard forum. Logged on to Pacific once again, quite choppy, but still not too many around.
So i decided to try my luck with the free shards. Tried out the RUNUO ones, but each lacked the 'old' feel of UO, and the community of this place.
So here i am.
You will see me about as 'ChoiceMade', running around the place, exploring the lands which is what i loved doing back when i first started playing UO. I have tried to attend most of the events which are pretty fun, and once i've trained myself up i'll give them a go.
A few questions:
Who are the main guilds here?( im interested in RP, PvM, general shenanigans)
What are most people doing?
What are some must see or must do things on here?
Are there many notable Player Run Towns about?
Thanks Derrick and everyone else who are doing such a great job in building up this shard.
ChoiceMade

Re: Hail!
Welcome to UOSA, many of us have similar stories as you, we've pinged around every shard possible, trying to find that true "old UO feel" - you may not find an exact replicate here, but it's definitely the closest in existence, and the community's not half bad! (a lot of the l33t pvpers don't stick around here for a long time because many of them aren't a fan of accuracies)
Who are the main guilds here?( im interested in RP, PvM, general shenanigans)
- I couldn't tell you, because there's very few guilds that I consider actual guilds. "cA" is a guild of trickery, thieves and explosives so be wary around them. UOH is a guild ran by Blackfoot which hosts weekly dungeon crawls.
What are most people doing?
- This shard is great for it's diverse playerbase. Many people are PVPing, but we also have plenty of people who just craft all day, some people who farm all day, IDOC hunters, fulltime fishermen, pirates, and usually there's themed on-going events held by players (awhile back we had a DC Comics themed guild war, currently I hear talk of someone starting up a gladiator pit) - Fact is, there's always something interesting going on if you keep your eyes peeled.
What are some must see or must do things on here?
- The UOSA Museum is definitely worth checking out. It's just west of the swamp near Britain & Compassion Desert.
Are there many notable Player Run Towns about?
- There are many player run towns, quite a few have "blessings" from the game staff, however to my knowledge the guilds who go inactive eventually lose their blessings (it's a grey area/shaky ground). Most rune libraries have a book with runes to player ran towns.
If you can catch me in IRC, I'll hook you up with a runebook to a few good "newbie spots" to get you started and with a rune to my rune library which pretty much covers the entire shard's locations

Absolutely keep your eye on the player ran event section of the forums.
Check it twice a day some people give a lot of notice and some put it up an hour before hand.
There are tons of player ran events going on all the time that most people jsut dont know about.
Keep yourself informed and you will always have somthing to do
note: also if you come check out the museum for the first time keep in mind its under contstruction
we are in the process of moving into the castle next door (which you can also check out)

Heya,
Welcome to the shard. I think you'll feel right at home. UOSA really does give ya that Nostalgia fix
There is quite a strong contingent of PvM RP guilds so you should be able to find one that suits you. Check out the guilds section of the forum.
Have a goodun and see you ingame.

Re: Hail!
Welcome to the server! I've tried many free shards myself and have found that this is the best. I very much enjoyed Divinity for a while, but the bitching and moaning about what the server needs added/removed wrecked the population. Derrick does a great job of keeping the server on track, with all the nuisances of the age we all loved, with a genius stonewall tactic of strict adherence to a cutoff date.
The population is healthy, the events are good, and the rule set is throughly enjoyable.
Have fun! (Iif you're having trouble finding a spot/placing a larger house when you get to that point, I recommend Tabius' house placement service; you can find info about it here: http://forum.uosecondage.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14800.)

Re: Hail!
Hey Choice,
Who were you on Oceania?
I played on Oceania from shard release until Apr 2003 (aos release), mostly under the Lestat alias - not to be confused with the trammie of the same name. When I wasn't playing that I was either on my stat axer (Nightshark), dexer (Marshall Mathers) or thief (Pockets). I also had a character called "Dread Lord Shark", which was my only T2A character on Oceania... it took stat not long after UO:R and I deleted it
I knew most of the fel moongate crowd, if you were a regular.

Re: Hail!
[OOC: Hey Choice,
Have you heard about The Militia?
We're a relatively new role-playing guild with a very content rich background and well-structured hierarchy to ensure fun can be had by all guild members without the need for guild leaders to necessarily be around; as activity is generated by the members themselves, such as foot patrols lead by mid-level superiors etc. We're constantly on the look out for Recruits, whether they wish to join the militia side of the guild, or make a citizen character that could be anything from a barkeeper, to a craftsman, to a treasure hunter, to a highwayman.
We offer a 'hard-core' RP style that as far as I am aware, is currently unavailable in any other guild on the shard. By this, I mean we don't use magery, we don't use magic weapons; we're role-playing rag-tag militiamen designed to make an already difficult era even more tough, i.e. peasants who're fed up of having their fields raided by orcs, and have taken up what arms they can find to help protect other citizens like they themselves used to be.
We're not designed to be amazing at PvP, or even stand up really well to a multiple PK attack - We're designed for long-term fun, based on a concept and similar rules that have worked (and still are working) on the official OSI 'Europa' shard since '98 (and our inspirational guilds/communities are still running strong there today after 12 years).
We also follow a ruleset known as the 'Laws of War' which is tried & tested; it worked with the Europa RP communities of this era (only adapting to account for the games' expansions over the years). This LoW means that any RP guilds who choose to go to war with us must also abide by this same rule-set; this rules cover things like recovery time after battles, magic restrictions, and looting; ensuring that combat and interaction is kept fair, such as "low-fantasy" guilds standing a chance on the battlefield against a guild solely based around the use of magery, for instance.
It might sounds like a lot of effort to some people; and many don't enjoy the concept of playing without magery or magic weapons after years of doing so... But with a possibility to have up to 15 characters on this shard and not pay a penny, what've you got to lose?
Feel free to check out our website, and if you have any questions, you can PM me on the forums or contact me by the ICQ number in my signature.
Regardless of whether or not you choose to have a career in the militia, I hope you enjoy your time on the UOSA shard!]
