Blacksmithing questions - help!

Ok, i've looked through the blacksmithing guide here, and it seems to be written for people who already know what they are doing a bit. I think i'm missing something.

I made a miner/smith, i've had him mining and blacksmithing Katanas (as the guide reccomended), i've spent a considerable amount fo time doing this, and it's raised by about four points.

Am I missing something, is there a more efficient way to get this done, or does it just take this long?

shard has enough blacksmiths, buy their wares that they had to work hard for.
