CTF Guide

Post by Pro »

Introduction:

Capture the flag, the idea is simple you take the opponents flag and capture it by using it on your teams flag.
Execution is not as easy so start with here's a few things you'll need to know to start.

Basics

There's 3 types of people in a ctf
Player Job
Defenders > Defend the flag from being taken and if that happens prevent it from leaving the base
Wallers > Place strategic walls to both hinder your opponents and help your team
Flaggers > Get the opponents flag and bring it back to your base.

Note: When joining a ctf all basic resources, refresh, heal, cure, strength, agility pots and regs are unlimited to try to carry some with you to make your job 10x easier.

Now you have the appropriate equipment and idea of what you're doing you may wish to make a key for these spells/macros to improve your game.

Wall of stone, Easily the most useful spell in a ctf it should be used at every chance possible at it hinders movement.

Double click flag macro
Assistant.Macros.DoubleClickTypeAction|5671|True
Is adequate it allows you to pick up a flag without clicking it and double click it in your back pack to pass.

All names: you can hotkey this in your uo options it'll give you a short lag spike if there's alot of people but it's very useful for catching players trying to hide behind parts of the map.

Flag refreshing

A very important part of ctfs so make sure u read this.
From the moment a flag is taken from the base you have 180 seconds for it to be captured or it will immediately kill the carrier and return to base. A way developed by players to get round this is for the flag carrier to suicide and have another team member grab it within 10 seconds so it doesn't return to the opponent base. DO NOT HEAL PEOPLE SUICIDING WITH THE FLAG IF THERE IS NO OPPONENT NEAR BY.

Now onto each role and how you should play it.

Defending

Recommended templates:

Tank mage
100/25/100
Macing/swords,eval int,meditation,tactics, Magery, resist/anatomy, wrestling

Dexer/medi dex

Fencing/swords, tactics, magery,meditation/poisoning, anatomy, healing , resist

As a defender your job as you already know is to prevent the other team from getting your flag the best way to do this is with a waller/synchronization.

Step 1 Wall up a choke point
step 2 hack at them.

It's a pretty easy job and not really something I need to go into detail with.

Here are the best spots for returning a flag due to the open are and the lack of LOS blocking on spells

Walling

Not that hard it just requires technique, Not alot of people play like this simply because it can get quite boring but here's the basics of it.

Your job is to prevent the opponent teams movement by dropping walls in their path and allowing your defenders to slay them with much ease. So here's a few ways of walling as shown in these screenshots;

With energy fields;

Pro's
1. Lasts longer then a wall of stone
2. Can cast through it onto the other side
3. Much longer then a wall of stone

Cons
1. Can pass through it
2. Can heal over it
3. High mana cost
4. Dispelled easily.

Good spots for energy fields

Area's show in the second pic are generally for if your team has pushed up into the middle.

Wall of stone

Pro's
1. Low mana cost
2. Quick fast time
3. Easily placed
4. Can't heal through it
5. Can stack poison fields infront of it

Cons

1. Doesn't last long
2. 3 Tiles wide
3. Large easy to dispel surface

When using wall of stone the best thing to do with it is use it to cut off choke points of 3 tiles, these appear in nearly every ctf map (apart from cave).

When you do attempt this remember that flags can be passed through if there is LoS so try to fill out the gaps here's an example of what u should do

A good way to counter the work of a waller is to place poison fields in wall spots making a gap for flaggers to run through on their way out of a base.

Flagging

Contrary to some peoples beliefs tank mage is really the only viable template for a flagging character due to its versatility and survivability. Your job as a flagger will be to collect and return flags from the enemy to start with I'm gonna list the best ways of getting a flag and survival techniques.

Basic rules to follow when flagging;

Always be strengthed to 120 health
always be at full stamina
always have a gheal precast if youre running into a group solo
Use Line of sight to your advantage
You don't have to stop to heal pot so if mages are chasing use this as your chance
Passing is key to winning good games
Alway try to return with 1-3 people with you otherwise its gonna be difficult
Crossheal
Use walls even if it means your own death

To start with the best way into a base is simply to buff up and refresh pot your way in while trying to avoid damage the real skill comes in getting out of the base. The first tip to pick up is to try and get through or around large open area's as fast as possible. Spots like the large room in Wharf are gonna be hard to survive.

Passing

Simple in practise harder when actually doing it, you need to be within 3 tiles of your target and double click the flag and target them. The best way to get out of a base is to pass through flaggers and crossheal to avoid mages being able to pick off one target quick with a single sync.

Don't forget you can pass through diagonal gaps and over stumps like such

Returning the flag if the game is a stalemate with both teams refreshing the only way to get the flag back is to return you have 2 ways of doing this:

1. Stay alive long enough for the opponent to have to kill themselves and risk you returning it
2. Kill the flag holder and return it from there

kk that's all i can think of right now if there's anything you think i need to add please post saying so.

I really wish everyone would read this, because it seems like a lot of people don't understand how to play. Great guide.

The best offense if the best defense. Do nothing but keep attacking, never quit. As long as you have their flag they cannot score. Always have their flag, never stand around and never defend the base. Once both teams have the flags then is the time to implement defensive and offensive strategies split in two. To many times have I done this and people just sit there and do nothing in their own base, when they could be attacking. If anything they could be decoys for other people who want to get the enemy flag or recapture their own.

Never stop attacking, has always been my tactic for CTF in any game, especially FPS.
