Another mining observation

Are ore veins still represented in 8X8 resource blocks? SOmetimes it seems like I have to move a lot farther than 8 tiles before nailing a fresh vein. I could be crazy, I haven't counted it out, the spacing just seems a bit off somehow. Also, what is therespawn rate for resources like ore and wood?
