What is your router model?

how comfortable are you with monkeying with router settings?

what wireless channel are you on?

Is the area in which you live flooded with lots of wireless networks?

How old is your router?

when you reinstalled XP, did you get all of your wireless drivers installed? Ethernet Drivers?

I'll attempt to help you...

#1 - Have you tried removing your new router and see if the problem persists?

#2 - Can you explain "we have both wired and wireless" so I assume one of you is wireless and one of you is wired?

#3 - Have you tried simply turning off the wireless signal and seeing if the connection improves for the wired connection?

#4 - You've got a router and a Verizon modem correct? Do you have the DHCP addressing enabled on the router as well as your modem or is your modem in bridge mode?

Yeah he smashed his old one because he thought his brother was cheating him out of 40k at an idoc, which he wasn't. HE was the one holding out.

I had this problem for a short time with my ISP after they "upgraded" my router. Turns out the problem was that the router was a Made in China POS, and could only solve it by changing the router to an older version after the technician they sent to my house for the fifth time told me it happened regularly and the only solution was changing the router (which the phone company was very much reluctant to do).

I wish you all the luck in the world!

If you're "flooded" with other wireless connections, you might try changing the channel. You could guess and check to see if any channel works better than another, or you could get a utility like this: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ and find out what channels your neighbors are using, then change yours to an unused channel (if one exists) or a channel that has the least amount of use. That's a good place to start anyway.

FIOS or DSL? If FIOS and you don't have TV with them, make them get rid of the crap-eater coax box and cable you directly to the ONT with cat 5. They won't want to, but they'll do it. You'll need a router of your own to manage the pppoe and break out NAT for multiple internal PCs.

If this is greek to you, find a local tech friend who can join you when you talk to Verizon.
