Sounds like you might have been jaded over the years on games that dont have harsh death rules. UO was built on these rules, it's why some of us love the game. I have been on UOSA for less than 3 weeks and i am about finished with my second 7x GM toon. I've seen my share of PK's but like a lot of the posters said before me, its painfully easy to escape as long as you are paying attention. Out of 50 plus PK sightings i've only been killed once. Roll with the punches and adapt, read the forums for tips, it's easy.
