Haly mage or Mace mage

I was assaulted by a mace mage the other week. I think the amount of "laughable" it was had a lot to do with how bad a player the person happened to be. However, I think had the individual been the garden variety hallywhacker things would have turned out differently. One of those situations where the guy really needed burst damage vice sustained.

Mace tanks are gimped a little against a dexer because of the inability to damage burst and to hit through armor. It's a template that takes quite a bit more patience than a hally tank. You can't just launch spells, equip a hally, and hope for the best. You've got to wait for things to develop a bit, and sometimes you just don't have that kind of luxury.

Sure some have it like some people are gm beggers, it takes a good player to do good with it thou, not like the haly mages that anyone can do good on.

Also if Qstaff mage would be good then you would see more then 2 of them on the server.

Most people aren't good at hally mages, they're only good at cycling+harm spam which is easily mastered and is the least effective way to kill an opponent in a timely manner.

I actually enjoy my mace tank more than my swords tank for group fighting but he is really, really red.

You will miss the giant hits you used to get from a hally. I enjoy being able to use heal/lightning wands and still hit my opponent (and not be hit 100%).

Also remember that magic mace weps are cheap as fuck.

I second Freight, While i primarily play okgo (swords) my pk and my dexxer are both macers and the stam drain, while preventable with potions, potions run out.

I buy vanq maces/staffs for cheap and not to mention, power weaps with offensive charges are VERY COMMON.

Personally think a mace tank is best for group pvp. You are gimped in a 1v1 although throughout a long fight you may gain the advantage with with constant stam drain.

But for group fighting with the utlization of wands + staves it is easily the best for group pvp. Although people don't typically use these items or have any idea how to. Freight uses a macing tank extremely well and we are just starting to crack the surface of possibilities with this template.

Pixel Clicker who had limited group pvp expierence 4 months ago jumped right in and became incredibly effective with his macing tank due to the constant dmg ,disrupts, and heals with his usage of wands.

Advantages to Macing tank-
Stam Drain
Kills Armor
Cheap Weps
Ability to confidently use wands w/o taking 100% hits
Althought War Hammer doesnt have the high end damage it has tighter dmg as opposed to hally

Disadvantages to Macing tank-
No huge 40 hits with gm weps
No poison blades
Limited decent 1 handers

Its not the template its how well you play it, thats the great thing about UO.

Now lets stop talking about it and actually go out there and do it.

The macer mage would be useful if the cycling mechanic worked accurately here.

In 1999, macer mages were more melee oriented and tried to drain their opponents mana, interrupt spells and take stamina since they swung much faster. That was what they used to do better than hally mages. But on UOSA hally mages can do all those things and better because of the cycle mechanic inaccuracy along with huge damage. That's a huge imbalance, hallies need to be a bit slower. There's little incentive to use macing right now.

Obviously if they ever fix this people are going to need to learn how to use the swords mage much differently.
