Mining Swings
Several players on the shard seem to remember that when you mined back in the day, you would swing a random amount of times, I believe between one and three, and near the end of the swing you would get the fail/success response. I distinctly remember being young and always loving getting that strike on the first hit!
It was definately not 'clockwork' as it is on shard currently.
Anyone else remember this, or have any further detail to offer?

Re: Mining Swings
The long delay on mining was very true at one point in time. However, this was removed and reduced down to a standard 1 second delay well before our cut off date for the era making it accurate here.New tinkering menu, pets, auto-stacking, and more. Yes, I too remember this rather vividly.
I remember the same thing for lumberjacking as well. Multiple swings before you get fail/succeed message.

If this is true, then why was it how I mentioned during UO:R as well, which I distinctly remember? However, this was removed and reduced down to a standard 1 second delay well before our cut off date for the era making it accurate here.
Re: Mining Swings
I agree. One way or another proof needs to be delivered beyond he said she said -- especially if this will have an impact on the resource macroers and strengthen the economy.
One of the best aspects of UO was it's economy and crafting system.

Re: Mining Swings
It said spam and overlong delays...not how long between each time you can use the skill (AKA the animated swings). Please define what an overlong delay is because I also remember mining and lumberjacking taking multiple swings before you were rewarded (or not), both in T2A and '04.

Re: Mining Swings
Agreed. That patch note is not nearly precise enough to support a standard, 1 second delay.
I know for a fact that during UO:R Mining was not clockwork. I remember very distinctly enjoying getting that message on the first hit instead of the second one, etc.

Re: Mining Swings
Majority of "short" delays in UO have always been one second.
Spell Damage Delay
Fire breath
Archery Damage Delay
Action Delay
Are just some off the top of my head. The "skill delays" for skills like anatomy, eval, arms lore, etc... later changed to exactly one second in early '00 even. Here is that patch note that specifically states the use of a "one second delay" on the skills.
This could easily be confirmed by verifying the mining delay in modern UO since it has not changed since the change or inception of the shorter mining delay in early '99. However, that is up to Kaivan or someone that has a current active Ultima Online account. Based on the history of the "short delay" that typically is always a one second delay it's safe to say that the mining delay that was shortened took the standard one second delay.
At least this would be the safest route until proven other wise in my opinion.

I konw this doesn't necessarily nail the coffin shut on this topic, because you are right in the previous patch note for mining. It doesn't specifically state the delay is one second. However, if you take into consideration of the standard one second delay that is used for all other common short delays it has always been one second.Server Publish Mar 9 2000 10:52AM CST Changes to Skill Gain - http://wiki.uosecondage.com/index.php?title=2000_Patch_Notes wrote: Skill delays for the following skills will be shortened to one second.

Re: Mining Swings
But that's not mining. Mining never worked like other skills, it was somewhat random.Majority of "short" delays in UO have always been one second.
These don't matter, because they don't refer to mining specifically, hence they cannot be used to ascertain the accuracy of mining.I konw this doesn't necessarily nail the coffin shut on this topic, because you are right in the previous patch note for mining. I know for a fact it was not a standard, 1 second delay. My first character was a miner, I remember those days very distinctly.
I will be making an account on OSI to test this, but OSI isn't exactly anywhere close to what it used to be regardless.
I disagree completely that it's a 'safe' assumption. You are extrapolating to a degree that is complete guesswork.Based on the history of the "short delay" that typically is always a one second delay it's safe to say that the mining delay that was shortened took the standard one second delay.
Re: Mining Swings
We should instead change the delay that "supposedly" isn't accurate to a random delay that could very well be inaccurate based on absolutely no facts at all?
That approach would be "guesswork" too...
I am all for changing the delay to make it accurate if it's based on a reliable source...
This isn't the case at the moment though.

Basically, until the patch, which Bane said came before Faust's patch note, mining and lumberjacking would give you a random amount of animated swings until you got your fail/succeed. I remember it that way, and am only siding with Bane as he was the uber-smith of the time.

Why were skills such as peacemaking (perhaps others?) affected by this then if it is not included in this list. I was able to peacemake with a one second timer before the last patch. Entice had always been ten seconds. If it were that peacemaking was affected by the one sec before the reversion back to the 10 second delay way was it not included in the list?
