Lots of Second Age Pictures

Post by Senses »

I was searching for some good Second Age Pics and I stumbled across a great trough of pictures that might add something to the feel of the shard. Peruse them if you dare.

found this also, with some pretty good stories and pictures, and it also sort of proved what I was looking for.

When taming something, it shouldn't say "you start taming a creature." it should say "you start taming a snow leopard" or whatever your taming.

Also, and I can't remember if it happens on UOSA, when a monster rummages through your corpse, it says "An ogre rummages through a corpse of Senses" rather than just rummages through a corpse.

Edited to add, even though I know someone has brought it up before, but it really strikes you just how many people didn't use horses back then. Makes you wonder just how much it effects game play allowing horses with perfect lag, when the very reason horses weren't used is because lag was so bad. Seems game changing.

When I first installed UO I had 64mbs of ram on a 233mhz computer I believe.

God technology has come a long way :)

On the shard I was on everyone used horses although there were many players that for some reason complained that they gave an advantage in PvP. Why those people did not get a horse I was never able to figure out.

On free shards the horse thing doesent make sense, becasue everyone is running fast computers and all lag is server side if any, while on OSI shards where packed full of players and most people had a computer which was purchased new in 1998 or close to it so that also contributed to lag, so using a horse vs being on food made no difference rather just the lag you noticed because on a horse you laged so much you moved as fast as walking, so might as well walk and not get all that bad lag feeling

I used horses, but I also remember going on foot a lot, even in PvP. It felt much smoother and easier to maneuvre, whether or not that was actually the case, it's hard to say. It was more about the feeling you got as Wise says.

I had a cable connection very early on, but i actually remember it having the opposite effect:
Alot of people were so lagged, that I could outrun alot of them, even on foot, and thus never really bothered buying horses. I guess that was stupid of me, huh? :) But, never the less, I remember shooting people to death with HXBs while they tried to run away on horse and keeping up with them on foot.

But, i do remember not wearing capes because the added animation seemed to make you go slower, just as later on, the animation of llamas was less then that of horses, and thus llamas seemed to run faster. I distinctly remember never wearing a cape again after coming to that realization.

Llamas appear to run faster because they are smaller images than horses. Not because of their animations.

As for capes, I never believed that nonsense, because cape animation was client-side, so as long as your computer was somewhat alright, it wasn't a problem. Somehow the idea that "if you wear a cape, you are a newbie" came about, and that's how the downfall of capes came about. At least on Lake Superior

That first site has pics that were done as promos. Notice in one shot the guy has 100 Str/Dex/Int.. impossible in T2A.

I too got cable very early on (cable vision launched on LI I think in 1999? maybe 1998). what was sick about that is I could run around in full valorite armor, vanq spear and not care because I know I had 100% of survival if I decided to run lol. This game has come a long way, skill doe snot equal connection anymore hehe.

I probably ran 50/50 with a horse or without on OSI depending on how laggy I was. I love playing now without the lag and with mounts, so much less tedious.

Lag death pissed me off so much once that I threw my computer chair across the room and broke it :D

Well, maybe that and the fact they do look pretty goofy.
