Would someone please give me a crash course on treasure hunting? I'm wanting to make an alt solely for this reason and don't know if the information I know is the same in this era.
Level 1 Maps, what is required to do these successfully?
Level 5 Maps, how do these go down, do these require more than one person? I imagine the hardest part is right after you dig up the chest and your on foot (yes?? after you dig up the chest) with mass elite mobs targetting you... what is needed to escape this situation? If in fact this is how it goes down...
I need a refresher on how tmaps work.

Gleaned from this source; what's happening here at UOSA is very similar,

EDIT: The original link I supplied seems to be broken, so you may need to "go around":

EDIT: The original link I supplied seems to be broken, so you may need to "go around":
- On the left-pane is a drop-down menu of links;
- Go down to "Essays";
- Choose "Treasure Maps".
(EDIT2: This works)
Highlights include:
- The ONLY person who can dig up a Treasure chest is the character who first decoded the map! So, if you get a map as a drop, or find one, do NOT "use" it, unless you are a Treasure Hunter who can dig it up and lockpick it;
- a fresh Treasure Map will be described by the string, "a tattered treasure map", while decoded maps are simply, "a treasure map"; if it doesn't say, "tattered" someone else has decoded it, and the map is useless without that person.
- Level One: can be found on Earth Elementals, Gargoyles, Gazers, Liches, Mummies, Ophidian Enforcers, Ophidian Warriors, Orc Mages, Sea Serpents, Terathan Warriors and Trolls. (I've gotten these off normal orcs, here at UOSA)
- Level Two: can be found on Air Elementals, Earth Elementals, Fire Elementals, Snow Elementals, Stone Gargoyles, Terathan Warriors and Wyverns.
- Level Three: can be found on Cyclopean Warriors, Drakes, Dread Spiders, Liches, Mummies, Ophidian Knight-Errants, Ophidian Shamans, Terathan Avengers, and Titans.
- Level Four: can be found on Drakes, Liches, Lich Lords, Ogre Lords, Ophidian Matriarchs, Terathan Matriarchs and White Wyrms.
- Level Five: can be found on Balrons, Blood Elementals, Elder Wyrms, Ice Fiends, Ophidian Matriarchs, Poison Elementals and Titans
- Level One: Mongbats, Orcs, Ratmen, Headless, Skeletons, Zombies (0-6 total)
- Level Two: Orc Mages, Orc Lords, Gargoyles, Gazers, Hellhounds, Earth Elementals (4-10 total)
- Level Three: Liches, Orc Lords, Ogre Lords, Dread Spiders, Air Elementals, Water Elementals, Fire Elementals (5-10 total)
- Level Four: Dread Spiders, Headlesses, Liches, Lich Lords, Daemons, Elder Gazers, Ogre Lords, Orc Mages (5-10 total)
- Level Five: Balrons, Lich Lords, Daemons, Elder Gazers, Poison Elementals, Blood Elementals (10-15 total)
Expected Loot:
- Level One: 1000 gold, 2-6 magic items, 2-5 scrolls, 10 gems, 15-20 reagents
- Level Two: 2000 gold, 10-15 magic items, 10-15 scrolls, 20 gems, 25-40 reagents
- Level Three: 3000 gold, 30 gems, 15-20 magic items, 20 scrolls, 30 gems, 20-40 reagents
- Level Four: 4000 gold, 15-20 magic items, 30 scrolls, 40 gems, 40-80 reagents
- Level Five: 5000 gold, 20-25 magic items, 25-35 scrolls, 50 gems, 100-150 reagents
I hope you find the information illuminating.

Re: T-Maps, Lvls 1-5
you could do a level 1 on a brand new character, it doesn't require any skills.
lv2 - 60 cart
lv3 - 80 cart (i think)
lv4 - 90 cart
lv5 - 99.5 cart
you can solo level 5, if you can bard well. for anything higher than level 2 you pretty much need provocation to succesfully solo them (taming would do, but it would be a waste having cartography on your tamer).

Peacemaking works great at this point, although having peacemaking requires sacrificing another important skill on an already crowded template.Sadistica wrote: I imagine the hardest part is right after you dig up the chest and your on foot (yes?? after you dig up the chest) with mass elite mobs targetting you... what is needed to escape this situation? Good to buy a couple seconds is having a summoned pet near the chest when you dig it up, initial chest guardians will not immediately aggro to you, but will aggro to the closest target. Spawn while looting on the other hand is a different story.

I solo 5's all the time. Balrons (and for the most part, Deamons) WILL IMMEDIATELY aggro you. Fun times!

This is true.
Also, having high Mining allows you to dig up the chest from several tiles away (I think you can be as far as 4 tiles away @ 90+), giving you the opportunity to be well away from the spawn: in most cases, you can mount your steed and be off the screen before the mobs acquire you.
Parking a tamed White Wyrm beside the chest probably can't be beat, though, lol; a Mage might consider stopping the digging right before the chest emerges and Summoning an Elemental/Daemon to act as a distraction.
Re, the ongoing spawn: it's best to Provoke the initial spawn in a chain and not kill them off: new spawn gets Provoked onto the old; please, if you're digging-up a Lvl3-5 (or even a 2) in a Newbie area, be considerate and kill-off the spawn before you leave.

Re: T-Maps, Lvls 1-5
I have hiding and stealth on my t-mapper. Although I still don't have the LP skill to open lvl 5's, on lvl 4's, I normally have enough time to hide before the mobs aggro on me, and then I stealth a couple of steps away, and provo from a distance. Definitely keep some mobs alive while you loot, so that you always have a provo target. If one target overpowers the others too heavily (an OL on a lvl 3 map), and he has already killed all the other spawn, paralize it until you get more spawn.
Also, remember, after decoding the map, and finding the location, dbl clik your shovel, then target the map, then target the place you wish to dig.
