Trophies as loot.
Trophies as loot.
I'm sorry, but I'm sick of dumping all regs and what not into an event and the people doing nothing more then looting reap the benefits.
This is two events in a row that I've done where I've actively participated just to watch others run around looting... and I've gotten squat.
Call me whatever name you want. This isn't risk vs. reward at all. If the risk was rewarded, it wouldn't pay to just loot.

Re: Trophies as loot.
Well i suggested in irc a while back when a few mods were actively chatting that since the invasions seem to be like champ spawns the way the boss monster spawns. Why not just set it up to auto spawn a trophy or coin on a person depending on the damage you do.
I don't see why this would be a problem since it's a champion spawn already.

Re: Trophies as loot.
I don't like basing it on damage. We can all bring our dragons like you do, but that gets kind of boring I think. I thought the provokers played a big part last night.
This was the first event I was ever a part of; I just kind of stumbled upon it. I didn't even know there were trophies on some of these guys, nor that there was some kind of boss monster at the end.
Does anyone ever participate in these events just for the fun of it?!?! People here are like little children that won't do anything unless they get a candy bar from mommy. It's unreal.

Re: Trophies as loot.
I agree with Mikel. Trophies are cool, and make you lots of money. But to be honest, I would've been there just as long last night whether I got any or not. The fun was running around like crazy trying not to die, whilst trying to get in a kill or two, whilst trying to help out the guy who helped you out 10 min ago.
I understand it sucks sinking all sorts of money into it (in armor, regs, pets), and not necessarily getting anything in return. The fact is though, that the mods don't have to do anything like this at all. And if they didn't, the UOSA population would be much smaller.....then how fun would it be to play?

Re: Trophies as loot.
I do participate in these events for the fun of it. I went not expecting to get any trophies. That would not have changed.
Where I have a problem is where some people can do the work while others can simply stand by... and the stand-bys can often wind up with greater reward.
Economics have a great impact on this game, and trophies can impact this dynamic incredibly. They are quickly becoming (if not already) the best way of obtaining items in game. I've seen people negotiating the purchase of items and housing based on trophy points. Some players put a lot of work into acquiring what they have, just like they put a lot of work into trying to get pts at these events... but how many times do they have to fight off a swarm, dieing valiantly at some point, only to watch someone sitting on the sidelines walk up and loot when the remaining hoard runs off after the next person fighting.
I'm simply saying, for the impact that trophy pts have on this game, there's a better way then having the GM looters win over the GM players.
And in response to the damage output determining trophy reward... Mikel is right, it would turn into a dragonfest with everyone making/bringing tamers. I'd rather see a random chance at spawning a trophy in the players pack when they contribute to the death of an even mob. Not sure how feasible this is, but it's better than the current way.

Re: Trophies as loot.
You know what, I was there before I even knew trophies were spawning as loot... and once word got out that they were, more people showed up... so take that nonsense somewhere else.Mikel123 wrote:Does anyone ever participate in these events just for the fun of it?!?! You can piss off with your children/candy bar comment. The event would have been fine with me WITHOUT trophies, but if you're going to have them you need to have them right. Understand this, I'd rather this event not have trophies then to give them out the way they were.
What's unreal is that you can assume a person wants something for nothing when they're arguing against that.
Re: Trophies as loot.
This is the way it has been for some time now. I looted a trophy off of a sewer rat once. You just have to be on edge and keep an extra eye out, also buy lots of dumb cheap things to cover up your items and always put your trophies in a pouch hidden under a cloak or something. The one thing you have to remember is at the end everyone gets a trophy so at least you have that to look forward to and prepare, don't go off carelessly dying because you could miss the big final drop. Kill what you can but stay at a safe distance so that you get the gold in the end. I can imagine this is how many players play the events, while the rest just go crazy and try and kill everything. If you want the big loot you have to be smarter and be much more careful and precise in your actions. You should never expect they are just going to simply be handed to you, you have to take it and secure it.

Re: Trophies as loot.
Actually, not everyone gets a trophy at the end of these events.
Shadowmire... random mobs dropped silver coins (maybe more). Some (a good number, but probably nowhere near as many as the "looters") spent their time fighting mobs while others waited for the houses to drop and looting bodies.
Vesper... many people fighting, many people just looting.
When there's swarms of mobs (which is fun), people often don't have a chance to loot before getting the next aggro taken care of. Meanwhile, the player who is standing off to the side without aggro jumps in to loot right away... or waits until the swarm moves away from a dead player to check the bodies in the area.
I'm not annoyed by losing stuff to death. If I had looted something worthwhile and didn't get it secured right away, that would be my fault. What I'm saying if you're going to have rewards like this for events, then let's make sure they're passed out properly.

Re: Trophies as loot.
This crap has got to stop. People need to stop thinking that just because someone is saying there is a better way to "reward" players that they are asking for a handout.JoshuaLee wrote:You should never expect they are just going to simply be handed to you, you have to take it and secure it.
Are risk/reward, just compensation (a stretch for a game, but an exhibit to the point), etc., etc. foreign concepts to the UO player? The players getting the handout are the ones who run around only/mostly looting. I'm arguing AGAINST these so called handouts.

Look, I watched the discussions a little about trophies and how they're passed out for tournaments. It looked like some people wanted trophies just for signing up.
I also understand why trophies are given out as loot instead of just for showing up to the event... to avoid people getting one just for showing up and doing nothing. The problem is, it essentially is still happening that way to some extent.
So I understand what you're saying, and I apologize for taking it as directed at me.
Re: Trophies as loot.
There is a big difference between the official once a month events run solely by the GMs, and semi-gm semi-player run events like Shadowmire. You can easily tell the difference when the big ones are, shadowmire is not a real city, Vesper however is. Don't get the levels of events mixed up, there will always be cool events like Shadowmire but the big events in my experience usually happen once a month, and sometimes somewhat unnannounced before hand at times.Zane wrote:Actually, not everyone gets a trophy at the end of these events.

Re: Trophies as loot.
The handouts are what makes it even more fun, I bet you half of the people wouldn't even bother coming out if they didn't think they would get a trophy or some kind of reward. It also helps the new players out a whole lot. I have bought trophies so many times from new players for 50k+ and they were able to go buy a house or buy the resources they need to GM skills.Zane wrote:This crap has got to stop. I understand the events are different, but the outcome is the same. Trophy loot drops = people looting while other people fight. This puts these two events in the same category even though they are different.
You and I differ on what makes something fun. What is fun is running around fighting mobs (not always a fan of fighting pks, but put them in there too) and interacting with people there. What's not fun is seeing the "work" you're doing taken advantage of by people not even really participating in the event.
If it takes a handout to get someone to play, then what will they do when they don't get a handout. Also, players don't need trophies to get a leg up when they start out. They just need to play the game.
Reward people for playing the game, not by taking advantage of the people playing the game.

Re: Trophies as loot.
There is a dungeon crawl every friday morning ran by Blackfoot and UoH where you could do this. Also go get some people together and just go to any dungeon and have your pvm fun there. The big events are there for a reason, what your talking about is just plain pvm which a lot of people do everyday.Zane wrote:JoshuaLee:

People play the game and pvm for fun every day, why not take advantage of an event that happens once maybe twice a month?
The huge trammel pvm raids are usually player run, and if they are run by the GMs you better bet they are gonna be classy and you have a good chance of getting some cool stuff. It's a gift they offer like once a month, something different than the normal, you should be grateful they take the time to make such nice events.
Besides you will not find as many dungeon raids and huge pvm gatherings here in Ultima Online, that is reserved for something like WoW.
