Hirelings

Post by chazzman69 »

I tried training wrestling on a paladin today and could not get him to stop hitting me after telling him to stop and stay? is this a glitch or do hirelings not respond to commands when being attacked anymore?

Hey Chazzman,

A recent patch changed that... but no worries! Just cast invisibility on yourself and he will stop attacking. Does not always work on the first time, but eventually, he will stop.

Good luck!

Or, you could use a mage instead of a pally, allow it to hit you, and have another character or a friend around to assist in healing you/the mage. This way you can grab a little resist while you're at it, and 2 characters can gain healing at once.

You would expend more in bandages healing the mage damage than you would just gaining the weapon skill and taking care of the resist (55+) at a later time using the guard-zone method. Not to mention you increase your risk of death while macroing if for instance, the npc were to double flamestrike you at an inopportune time.

True, but I wouldn't worry about macroing in your house with an NPC mage. The NPC will quickly run out of mana and after that point, if I'm not mistaken, he will continually waste his mana on low level spells and never have enough mana to cast even an ebolt. You just have to attend the macro until the mage's mana is depleted (shouldn't take long).

It's no good for resist but good for avoiding griefers :) Mages are far superior to paladins for skill gains, in my experience.

Also, I've tested twice now that you CAN in fact get them to stop hitting you. It just takes an excessive amount of spamming "all stop" "all stay", switching it up to throw in the NPC's name in place of All every now and then.

For all I know, their stopping had nothing to do with my commands, but they did eventually stop. Did this with a mage, by the way, so the damage I was taking during this fussy period was manageable. Might have been harder, taking good clips from a viking sword or something.

There's an easier way to do this.

Step by Step:
1. War Mode
2. "All Guard Me" - They turn Gray
3. Attack them
4. "All Follow Me" - They turn blue to everyone else again
5. "All Stay"
6. YOU run offscreen, but only just, and stay in war mode
7. Run back
8. You will continue to attack the hireling, but the hireling will not. Note: DO NOT MANUALLY ATTACK AGAIN, it will be automatic upon return

If it doesn't work, one of two things will happen:
1. The hireling still hits you - Problem: you didn't run far enough off screen, try again and run a little further.
2. You dont hit the hireling upon return from off-screen - Problem: you ran too far, try again and run a shorter route.

Takes me all of about 5 seconds to do it, really easy.
I hope this helps everyone with the issue. It has worked flawlessly for me. If you have an issue, post it and I will try to resolve it!

I got them to stop by saying all guard.. hit them.. walk away.. hit them and say all guard again..

Seems to work most of the time.
